Richard Russell BurtDentist
I am excited to be a member of the Modern Smiles team! It is great to be in a setting where I can meet and get to know many new friends.
I have been a dentist since 1989. Yep, I’m old, but I have loved every aspect of dentistry my whole 30+ year career! I graduated from Creighton Dental School and went immediately into the Army and into a General Practice Residency at Fort Sill (Lawton), Oklahoma. That lasted a year. Then I was sent to Mannheim, Germany where I served as a dental officer for three years. I came home to Idaho after that and purchased an existing practice in Blackfoot which I proceeded to build. I practiced there for eighteen years during which time I earned a Fellowship with the Academy of General Dentistry (500 Continuing Education Credits). My wife was working as an instructor at BYU-Idaho and decided she wanted to get her doctorate at that time, so after our last child graduated from Blackfoot High School, we moved to Indiana so she could pursue her degree. I worked in corporate dentistry while in Indiana and learned a lot. After that experience, I returned to Idaho and started working for another company in Boise. We lived in our home in Blackfoot and I commuted weekly to Boise for three years before I transferred to another corporation that promised to keep me closer to home. I also got another fellowship through the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain. I stayed with that new corporation until I was furloughed due to COVID 19. That turned out to be an excellent reason to move on to a private practice again, so when Dr. Satchwell posted that he was looking for some help to work here in Pocatello, I felt like I had been guided to this venture. He hired me in July, and I have been meeting many of you since then.
I am a man with many interests. I call myself a natural outdoorsman. I don’t hunt, but I fish and hike and do wildlife photography. I am a “plant nerd” and enjoy identifying the various wild plants I see while hiking, especially those with medicinal and edible qualities. I have no pets though I love all my neighbor’s fury friends. I enjoy birding and hope to do a “Big Year” sometime.
I love my kids and grandkids! I have five children, two boys and three girls, all of whom have flown the coop. They all have college degrees and the three girls have given us ten terrific grandkids. The family is scattered from Washington to Texas. All my kids and my Sweetheart are musicians, so music is a huge part of my life. I sing but play no instruments. I’ve always been the chauffer to all the music lessons and gigs and competitions over the years!
I am an author. I published three children’s books over the last six to ten years and a full length novel two years ago. I am always writing something. Currently I am writing a sequel to my first novel, another series of three novels, a stand alone novel, and a nature-based non-fiction book.
I am looking forward to meeting each of you and working with the terrific team here at Modern Smiles!
